PM E-DRIVE : Telangana to Add 2,000 Electric Buses to Public Transport Fleet

PM E-DRIVE: Public transport in Telangana is set for a major transformation with the introduction of 2,000 new electric buses. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) will roll out these buses across Hyderabad and other parts of the state to promote eco-friendly travel. The project has received official approval from the Union government under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. Reducing pollution in Hyderabad and easing growing passenger congestion are the main objectives of this initiative.

Officials said the decision was taken in view of the sharp rise in vehicle numbers and air pollution levels in Hyderabad. Electric buses are expected to significantly cut carbon emissions while offering a quieter and more comfortable travel experience for commuters. TGSRTC plans to deploy these buses first on high-density routes within the city, where passenger demand is consistently high.

To meet diverse commuter needs, the 2,000 electric buses will be introduced in multiple categories. These include low-floor buses, semi low-floor buses, standard air-conditioned buses, and mini electric buses. Special priority has been given to low-floor buses to help senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities board and exit buses with ease. Mini electric buses will be used in suburban and interior areas where narrow roads and lower passenger volumes require smaller vehicles.

Bus manufacturers will supply the electric buses in phases. Alongside this, discussions are already underway to establish adequate charging infrastructure across depots and key locations. TGSRTC management aims to develop modern charging and maintenance systems to ensure uninterrupted services and reliable operations. Training programs for drivers and technical staff are also expected to be part of the rollout plan.

From a financial perspective, rental charges have been fixed based on the type of electric bus. According to officials, the cost ranges from a minimum of ₹54.91 per kilometre to a maximum of ₹66.90 per kilometre. While the operational cost may appear higher initially, authorities believe that reduced fuel expenses and lower maintenance needs will make electric buses financially viable for the corporation in the long run.

The introduction of electric buses is also seen as a step towards positioning Hyderabad as a model green city in India. By shifting to cleaner public transport, the state government hopes to improve air quality, reduce traffic-related emissions, and encourage citizens to prefer buses over private vehicles. Officials believe this move will improve the overall commuting experience and strengthen public transport reliability.
